Day ONE! Supernatural Convention March 27-28 2015
For the first time ever my sister and I got the opportunity to go the first Supernatural Convention in Seattle! My sister and I were so excited! Supernatural was the show that my sister and I decided to watch on Halloween a year or so ago and ever since then it has been the show that we’ve bonded over. I mean I knew we were close before Supernatural but now, we have gotten so close that there is nothing in this world that can get between me and my sister. We’ve even started reading each other’s minds! It’s slightly creepy but still awesome! Add on the fact that we got to go to the Convention… Can you talk about exciting??
On Friday my family and I drove up to Seattle and checked in at the Convention. It was in the gorgeous Hyatt Hotel (which I must say, is breathtaking!)
We also saw a ’67 Chevy Impala! 🙂 We were so excited to see baby!
Once we paid and checked in we were able to look around at the vendors. The Hunter’s Den vendor that makes all their Supernatural merchandise. They had awesome T-shirts, necklaces and really pretty jars of salt. Another vendor that was there was Megan Padalecki, Jared Padalecki’s aka Sam Winchester, sister who wrote the cutest little children’s book, Big Mo. She wrote, illustrated and self-published her first children’s book all by herself! To read her interview about her book click here.
After the vendors we went to listen to some panels from Gil McKinney (Young Henry Winchester), Felicia Day (Charlie), Louden Swain Band, Richard Speight Jr. (Trickster/Gabriel), Rob Benedict (Chuck, etc.) and Matt Cohen (Young John Winchester). I’ve never been to a convention where you get to listen to actors and actresses and it was fantastic! The way they treat the fans is superb and you really get the feeling that they truly care about Supernatural and the fandom, no matter how crazy we are! I think the panels make the actors more human, more friendly to the fans. They aren’t just hero’s to the fans but now they’re actual people who care about their fans. It’s like adding to your family almost. I couldn’t get over how nice they were.
Gil McKinney was really nice and he told many stories about the show and his life before the show. My favorite moment was when he started off by saying how happy he was to be in Seattle and how he’s always wanted to come to Seattle he was immediately corrected by a fan that it is in fact Bellevue, not Seattle! The look on his face was priceless! 🙂 He also mentioned that he had actually auditioned for Sam Winchester, but he was too good looking for the part! About eight years later he was called back to the show and all he could think was, “that things still on?” Click here for more on Gil McKinney at the Convention.
Speaking of nice, you probably will not meet a better fandom. Every fan was kind in the convention. Not once did I get the feeling that it was stupid to be so nerdy or anything! I met a nice mother and daughter who were just as excited for us (as our first convention) as we were! And we even met two sisters who, just like us, bonded over Supernatural too. I could not ask for a nicer group of people.
After all the panels, my sister and I bought some merchandise (I mean what else are you going to do?) and took as many pictures as possible. We had to wait until 9:30pm for the free karaoke/concert. (See below: But by the way? It was fantastic! Glorious and amazing!)
Pretty soon we were able to get an autographed photo of Felicia Day! She is absolutely amazing! She was kind and a fan asked her a question about something that had to do with the way society bullies nerds/geeks and she went on and on about how it was horrible to treat someone with different opinions/likes/dislikes/etc. so horribly. I mean Felicia Day is considered the greatest nerd of any fandom. She is literally titled the Queen of the Nerds, to hear her talking about it showed how much passion she had for all her fandoms and other people’s fandoms too. I was so thrilled that I got to meet her, talk to her and get an autograph from her! Day was made!
Karaoke was later that evening and it wasn’t just the fans going up to sing… It was the fans and the ACTORS going up to sing together! Gil McKinney (Young Henry Winchester), Felicia Day (Charlie), Louden Swain Band, Richard Speight Jr.(Trickster/Gabriel), Rob Benedict (Chuck, etc.) and Matt Cohen (Young John Winchester) all sang karaoke with any fans that had signed up earlier that day. It was crazy, extraordinary, and marvelous! This is what I meant by getting the feeling from the actors/actresses that they truly care about Supernatural and the fandom. They sang with the fans until 1:00AM that night. It was truly a party among the fandom!
We also got to learn a little bit more about Richard Speight Jr. (Trickster/Gabriel), Rob Benedict (Chuck, etc.) and Matt Cohen (Young John Winchester) new web series called Kings of Con. They were raising money for their series and we got to hear Matt Cohen make a deal. Without asking his fellow actors, Matt Cohen decided that he was going to make a deal that if they could raise $200,000.00 that he would he would run down the street naked. Needless to say he regretted that the next day when Richard Speight Jr., having put the video of him announcing that statement on their webpage, announced that they were very close to making that goal! 🙂 If you don’t believe me check out their twitter pages here, it’s all there!
So many unbelievable and amazing stuff happened Friday night that I wasn’t even sure if the next day would amount too much! Boy was I wrong!
For Day Two of the Supernatural Convention please go to the next post! It’ll be up shortly! 🙂
